About Sam Hall
As a hyperrealist painting with acrylics, I am inspired primarily by Nature, which provides everything I need. That said, I have been influenced by painters like Brian La Saga, a Canadian artist who also specializes in Nature, the New Zealand artist Graham Sydney and the young Serbian painter Veljko Djurjevic, whose paintings of mountains and forests are sublime.
Prior to actually painting, I may take as many as half a dozen to 40 or 50 photographs of a scene from different angles and perspectives, including close-up details. I then concentrate on the composition, perspective, balance and colour,. I use photographs only for reference. Unlike photorealists, I do not merely copy photographs, but interpret them in order to create my own highly detailed illusions of reality. I achieve this either by vivifying or changing the colours and using my own unique methods for detailing.
Nor do I paint in the orthodox way by laying down an underpainting. Instead, I work from the top left to the bottom right of the painting, first painting in the ‘rearmost’ layers of the picture (i.e. the sky), then gradually working my way forwards, layer by layer, to the foreground. I then add in the tiny details. This is the part I enjoy most and at this stageI will often let my sense of humour take over.
Recently, I have begun to paint in a surrealistic style, painting entirely from my imagination. It is enormous fun and I find that the most extraordinary ideas pop up like bubbles from mud. Examples are my paintings 'Woman with a Yellow Cello', 'Fish Swimming in the Sky' and 'The Emergence of the Fish People' which you can find in the 'Surreal and Fantasy' collection.
